CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

“Ahhh, this really hurts,” I complained as the tattoo needle buzzed against my skin.

“Stop being a baby, it will be over soon,” Sydney said teasingly as he gently squeezed my fingers in comfort and support.

I don’t know what had convinced me to get myself inked. Maybe it was the capacious amounts of alcohol I’d consumed or maybe it was the fact that I loved my best friend enough to let him practice on me. But here I was, getting tortured by this sadistic bastard who called himself a tattoo artist.

“Just one more letter and I’ll be done,” Rome told me as he wiped away the excess ink from my skin, then started tattooing again. I was getting the word ‘Friends’ tattooed onto my inner wrist. And no it wasn’t just some random word; it matched the ‘Best’ that was inked onto Sydney’s wrist and the ‘Forever’ that was inked onto Rome’s.

It had all started when Rome’s friend Trent, who worked at the shop with him, came over to do a piece for him. It was Rome’s eight piece of body art and it was a jungle theme that, when completed, was going to cover his entire back. Since Sydney also had three tattoos under his belt, I was the only one who hadn’t gotten any work done as yet, so the two of them began nagging me to get something. Although I didn’t like needles, by then I’d consumed enough alcohol to not only agree to getting inked, but to also suggest that the three of us should get something matching. Then Sydney had suggested that we could immortalize our over eighteen years of friend with a ‘Best Friends Forever’ tattoo, and Rome and I had quickly agreed.

So the guys had quickly gotten their ink done and now I was suffering through mine. The alcohol haze had swiftly worn off as soon as the needle had touched my skin, and although I wasn’t regretting getting something that would tie me to the two people I loved most in the world, forever; I was sorry that it had to involve some type of needle.

“There, it’s done,” Rome said as he cleaned the tattoo one last time then rubbed some ointment on it. “Be careful with it for a couple of hours.”

“Will do,” I replied as I held up my wrist so that everyone could admire Rome’s work.

“It looks good,” Alexa complimented. “But then I always knew that my man had some talent.” She leaned over and planted a quick kiss on Rome’s lips.

It had been three months since the two of them had started dating and in that time, I’d come to grips with their relationship. It also helped that my relationship with Sydney was also going great and he made me incredibly happy.

“Can’t believe that y’all got matching tats like a bunch of bitches,” Marcus teased. “Are y’all gonna start having period cramps and start moaning about how niggas ain’t shit.”

“Nah, because then we’d be just like you,” Rome retorted.
